The top Summer (quarter June, July August) of all time in terms of the number of visitors who came to Chania by international flights was this year, for the International Airport “Daskalogiannis”, according to the official data of the managing company Fraport Greece.
Traffic was up 125.2%. In the first eight months of 2022, 1,901,229 passengers were transported by international flights and 430,228 passengers by domestic flights. In the corresponding period of 2021, 790,408 passengers were transported by international flights and 244,759 passengers by domestic flights.
Regarding the number of flights during the first eight months of 2022, 16,415 were carried out, compared to 9,552 in the corresponding period of 2021.
According to Fraport data, in August 2022, 586,869 passengers were handled through Chania Airport, compared to 433,292 last year. Worth mentioning is the fact that during this year’s August the traffic at Chania airport was higher than in 2019 when 502,014 passengers were handled.
At this point, of course, it is worth emphasizing that the best year for Chania, in terms of foreign arrivals, was 2018 (while nationwide it was 2019) and the second best in 2019. This was followed by a disastrous year for the whole country and not only (2020), due to the pandemic, and a transitional year (2021), which essentially for the Chania region started in mid-late July.
This year, however, foreign arrivals… took off, while domestic arrivals moved to the levels of 2019, with small variations – mainly in the month of June.
The following figures concerning the number of foreign passengers handled (arrivals – departures) per month and per year are revealing:

Regarding the nationalities, the Germans returned to 3rd place in the ranking of arrivals from 4th, the Poles from 5th place, rose to 4th, while the Norwegians from 3rd place they had occupied in July, fell to 6th.
The top ten nationalities are formed without any other particular rearrangements, except for the 10th place where the Romanians displaced the Belgians.
