A major investment in energy autonomy and reducing the environmental footprint of airports by Fraport Greece


Fraport Greece announces the installation and operation of a photovoltaic park at Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia”, marking the first photovoltaic project implemented at a regional airport in Greece and reinforcing its strategy for sustainable development and reducing the environmental footprint of the airports it operates.

The project involves the installation of a photovoltaic plant with a capacity of approximately 3 MWp, with an estimated annual electricity output of 4.5 GWh. The energy produced corresponds to the annual needs of around 1,100 households and will cover the airport’s operational energy requirements, significantly reducing reliance on conventional energy sources.

The photovoltaic park spans an area of 35,000 square meters and consists of 4,877 state-of-the-art solar panels and 8 inverters. The investment, totalling approximately €3.4 million, was fully financed by Fraport Greece.

The operation of the project is expected to result in an annual reduction of approximately 3,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to an overall reduction of the airport’s carbon footprint by around 30%. Construction works for the photovoltaic park began in March 2025 and were completed in December of the same year, with all equipment fully compliant with European standards and regulations.

With this project, we are taking a substantial step toward energy neutrality, while also contributing to environmental protection and the sustainable development of the wider region. We remain committed to creating modern, safe, and environmentally responsible airports.”

The project contractor was Damco, while the study was carried out by Redex.
