The MBA in Air Transport Management (MATBA) is the newest postgraduate program jointly developed by the University of the Aegean and Democritus University of Thrace, with the support of Athens International Airport and in collaboration with Hermes – Air Transport Organisation.
It is the first MBA in Greece exclusively focused on air transport, built to prepare high-responsibility professionals for leadership roles across the aviation sector, combining academic depth with applied knowledge.
Academic Structure and Areas of Specialization
MATBA is organized around three specialization pillars—Airports, Airlines, and Air Navigation Service Providers—offering a complete view of the air transport ecosystem.
The program runs for 18 months (90 ECTS) and follows a blended learning format (in-person and online), allowing students to study alongside their professional duties.
The first semester focuses on the operational, economic, and regulatory environment of air transport.
During the second semester, students choose their specialization and move into advanced strategic management topics.
The program concludes with an MBA Thesis, either research-oriented or applied, depending on the student’s interests and career goals.
Academic and Institutional Framework
The development of MATBA responds directly to the sector’s growing demand for professionals who understand the full spectrum of aviation—airport operations, regulatory compliance, airline strategy, infrastructure, and sustainability (ESG).
As the industry becomes more complex and more interconnected, specialized MBA programs play a central role in preparing executives capable of managing that complexity.
Support from key institutional partners such as Athens International Airport and Hermes ensures a strong link to the industry and access to international best practices.
The program’s global profile is further strengthened by the participation of faculty members and industry experts from eight countries, enriching the learning experience with diverse perspectives.
MATBA ultimately acts as a bridge between higher education and the strategic development needs of the aviation sector, equipping graduates to respond effectively to the evolving challenges of the industry.
