Geneva, Switzerland – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced the appointment of Saadia Zahidi as its next Director General, marking a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to lead the global airline association since its establishment in 1945. Zahidi will officially assume her new role on 1 November 2026, becoming the ninth Director General in IATA’s history.

Her appointment follows the departure of Willie Walsh, whose tenure concludes on 31 July 2026 before he joins Indian carrier IndiGo as Chief Executive Officer. During the interim period, Sandrine Le Borgne, IATA’s Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President for Corporate Services, will serve as Interim Director General.

A Leader from the World Economic Forum

Unlike many previous IATA leaders who came directly from airline executive positions, Zahidi joins the association after more than 20 years at the World Economic Forum (WEF), where she serves as Managing Director and Member of the Managing Board.
